Tips and Tricks to Help You Solve Common Woodworking Problems

Different types of woods possess different types of characteristics that may result in different woodworking problems. That is especially the case if as a woodworker you have not prepared yourself to address such potential woodworking problems. There are various tips and tricks that you can utilize to solve the various woodworking problems. Consequently, here I will provide you with only some of my preferred tips and tricks.

 

1.Smelly wood

An odor in wood is a common problem experienced. The characteristic of the wood in regard to its ability to be able to absorb many odors emanating from the outside worldis similar to a sponge. In some cases, the accumulation of saturated odor in wood may tempt a woodworker to discard the wood piece because of the smell emanating from it.

It may be a bit challenging to be able to prevent the wood from absorbing odors but it is still a possible task. You may employ the use of commercial cleaners including olive oil and vinegar and baking soda for removing the wood odors. Sealing the wood using a sealant such as dewaxed shellac may also help.

 

2.Saw blade burns

When you are working with a fine wood, a saw blade burn on the out wood edge may affect the appearance and finish of your project and make it less attractive. While it is possible to sand off or scrape the burns, it is often advised that you should dwell on preventing the creation of the burns. Moreover, cutting the wood or scrapping of the burn is often difficult and may leave a result that is not desirable or pleasing.

You can avoid saw blade burns occurrence by making some necessary adjustments to your saw before you commence working with it For example, you should use a high-quality table saw and your saw should have a miter gauge to enable the making of angled crosscuts.

 

3.Weak shelves

Sometimes you may build a bookshelf for storing and holding heavy items and after sometime, you may realize that the shelf is too weak to allow continued use. That situation is often frustrating and therefore you should do all you can to avoid it. The answer is for you to build a super-strong shelf that is attractive and that you can achieve by making a few adjustments.

You can build shelves that are super-strong by employing the use of a breadboard edge and by sandwiching plywood.

 

4. Sticky drawer

Seasonal moisture changes, winter time or wet weather, tend to cause wood, especially in an old furniture piece to shrink/swell. Sliding in and out of sticky drawers always require a lot of effort or pressure. There are various techniques that you can employ to maintain the right size of drawers during the winter periods and wetter summers. You can use wood that has been blended with other materials like vinyl and fiberglass.

 

5.Glue run-out

Glue run-out is resulted by applying excess fixative to a joint. This result is often frustrating for the simple reason that it can negatively affect a project that is to receive a stained finish. That is because stain may be prevented from leaching into the pores clogged by excess glue.

It is important that you prevent wood joinery glue run-out by employing the use of different techniques including Mitered Butt and Mortise and Tenon.

 

6. Open mitered corner

It is a common occurrence in that the two boards mitered corners may not align properly. The reason is that wood as a building material is often susceptible to constant adjustments because of either the existing wood imperfections or the air humidity. It is possible to close or align such an open mitered corner. One technique you can employ in that respect is by using 4d finish nails, a pair.

 

7. Stripped screw hole

It is a common problem that sometimes the screws mounted in the wood simply refuse to hold anymore. The good news though is that there are different techniques that you can employ for fixing a stripped out screw. For example, use small strips of similar wood type to fill the created screw hole. You are then supposed to re-drive the screw.

 

8. Wood blowout

When you use a hole saw or spade bit for a wood project then wood blowout is often a common problem resulted. For you to drill clean holes, important for clean exit/entry, you have to adjust your drilling/cutting technique. When you constantly practice and hone your wood hole drilling skill, you will be able to avoid the wood blowout problem. Ensure you expertly understand how to use the tool for drilling a wood hole.
